Novels That Take Place in Ireland
Well, I tell you what, I don’t know much about them fancy book learnin’ things, but I do like a good story now and then. And if that story’s happenin’ over in Ireland, well, that’s even better. So, let me tell you about some of them books, the ones folks say are set in that there Ireland place.
Now, some fellas, they write all sorts of books. I heard tell of this fella, wrote a bunch, but I can’t rightly remember all their names. Sounded somethin’ like “Brave New World” and “Point, Counter Point.” Don’t know if them’s Irish, but I reckon he might’a written somethin’ about Ireland too, seein’ as how these writer fellas, they write about all sorts of places.
But there’s this one book, they say it’s real somethin’. Called “Cr na Cille” or somethin’ like that. Now, it’s a bit strange, this one. All the folks in it, they’re dead! Can you believe that? Not ghosts or nothin’, just… dead. Buried in the ground, talkin’ away in their coffins. Happens over there on the west coast of Ireland, durin’ that big war, the Second World War, they called it.
And if you’re lookin’ to learn somethin’ about Ireland, not just stories, but real history, there’s this book by a fella named Neil Hegarty. “The Story of Ireland,” it’s called. Folks say it tells you all about Ireland, from way back when to now. All them kings and queens and battles and such. Probably a good one if you’re tryin’ to understand them Irish folks better.
Then there’s this gal, Liz Nugent. She wrote a book called “Lying in Wait.” Takes place in Dublin, that big city over there. I ain’t read it myself, mind you, but I heard it’s a good one, all about secrets and such. Folks in Dublin, I reckon they got their own set of troubles and stories, just like the rest of us.
- Heard tell of some other books too. “The Elephant of Belfast,” that sounds like a big one. And “Ireland” by Frank Delaney, well, that one’s gotta be about Ireland, right? Then there’s “The Wonder” by Emma Donoghue. Don’t know what it’s about, but it sounds fancy.
- And if you want more, there’s “The Barracks” and “Beautiful World.” Lots of books about that Ireland place, seems like. They say the Irish, they’re good at tellin’ stories. Guess that’s why there’s so many books.
Now, they say Ireland, it ain’t all the same everywhere. Different parts, different stories. Just like here, I guess. One town’s different from the next. So, these books, they probably show you all different sides of Ireland. The cities and the countryside, the rich folks and the poor folks, the happy times and the sad times.
And every month, seems like there’s a new Irish book comin’ out. Or a book by an Irish fella, writin’ about somethin’ else maybe. But they all got that Irish way of tellin’ a story, I hear. Somethin’ special about it. Makes you want to listen, makes you want to know more. So, if you’re lookin’ for a good book to read, and you like a bit of that Irish charm, well, you got plenty to choose from.
So, there you have it. A whole bunch of books, all takin’ place in that there Ireland. Some old, some new, some happy, some sad. But all of ’em, they tell you a little somethin’ about that place and the folks who live there. Now, I gotta go, got chores to do. But you, you go on and find yourself a good book. And maybe, just maybe, you’ll learn a thing or two about Ireland along the way.
And remember, I ain’t no scholar, just tellin’ you what I heard. But if you’re lookin’ to read about Ireland, these books, they’re a good place to start. Happy readin’, and don’t forget to tell me all about it when you’re done!
