Alright, so you got that fancy colored hair, huh? Like them reds and blues and greens, or whatever the young folks are doin’ these days. Well, lemme tell ya somethin’, sunshine ain’t your friend. Nope, not one bit. It’ll fade that pretty color faster than a jackrabbit on a hot skillet.
Sun protection for colored hair, that’s what they call it. Sounds fancy, but it just means keepin’ the sun off your head. Back in my day, we just wore a bonnet. Big ol’ bonnet, covered everything. But you young’uns probably ain’t gonna do that. So, here’s the deal, the way I see it.
First off, you gotta think about hats. Not just any hat, mind you. A good, wide-brimmed hat. One that covers your whole head and shades your face too. Straw hats are good, keeps things cool. But any hat’s better than nothin’. Think of it like a little umbrella for your hair. Keeps them sun rays from beatin’ down and bleachin’ out that color you paid good money for.
Then there’s these sprays and stuff. Hair sunscreen, they call it. Sounds crazy, but I guess it works. I saw one the other day, Coola Organic Scalp & Hair Sunscreen Mist it said. SPF 30. Now, I don’t know what all that SPF stuff means, but they say it keeps your skin safe, so I guess it does the same for your hair. You just spray it on, like hairspray, I reckon. Easy peasy.
- Hats are your best friend: Big ones, wide ones, the kind that make you look like you’re ready for a picnic. That’s what you need.
- Find that sunscreen stuff: Look for the sprays, they seem easiest to use. And make sure it says somethin’ about SPF, whatever that is.
- Stay in the shade: When the sun’s beatin’ down, find a tree, an umbrella, a porch, somethin’ to get under. Just like we used to do on the farm.
Now, I hear tell there’s all sorts of other things you can do. Special shampoos and conditioners, they say. Keeps the color in, makes it last longer. I ain’t never used ’em myself, good ol’ soap and water was always good enough for me. But maybe they work. You can try ’em if you want. They got all sorts of stuff at the store these days, it’s enough to make your head spin. And I’ve seen these ads for Ultra Violette, it sounds like it might be some kinda fancy stuff. And they got these stores sellin’ all kind of “Beauty, Brow Skincare Arrivals”. I don’t know, maybe you can find somethin’ in there for your hair.
But the main thing, the most important thing, is to keep that sun off your head. That’s the best way to keep your colored hair lookin’ good. Don’t go fryin’ it like bacon in a pan. And don’t go spendin’ all your hard-earned money on fancy treatments if you ain’t gonna protect it from the sun in the first place. That’s just plain silly.
And another thing, don’t go washin’ your hair every day. That strips the color out too. Just like washin’ clothes too much, fades ’em right out. Once or twice a week is plenty, unless you been rollin’ around in the dirt or somethin’. And when you do wash it, use cool water. Hot water ain’t good for colored hair, makes the color run, just like it does with clothes.
So there you have it. My two cents on keepin’ that colored hair lookin’ its best. Hats, sunscreen, shade, don’t wash it too much, and use cool water. It ain’t rocket science, just common sense. Now go on and enjoy that pretty hair of yours, but be smart about it, ya hear?
And one last thing, remember them AncestryDNA+Traits things they talk about on the TV? They say it tells you about your traits, maybe even why your hair is the way it is. I don’t know about all that, seems like a lot of hooey to me. But if you’re curious, go ahead and try it. Just don’t blame me if it tells you somethin’ you don’t wanna know. Anyway, the young folk are always into something new, so I don’t meddle much.
Just keep that sun off your head, and you’ll be alright. That’s all there is to it.
