Alright, let’s talk about menopause nails. You know, when you get to a certain age, things just… change. Ain’t nothin’ stays the same, that’s for sure. And your nails? Yeah, they change too. Just like everything else, Lord have mercy.
I’ve heard tell that some fancy doctors call it “hormonal changes.” Hormones this, hormones that. All I know is, my nails ain’t what they used to be. Used to be strong as a horse’s hooves, now they’re… well, not so much. They get all brittle, you know? Like they could just snap off any minute. Makes it hard to open a can of beans, I tell ya.
And sometimes, they get thick. Thick like a turtle’s shell. Not pretty, mind you. And sometimes, they get all ridged up, like little tiny mountains runnin’ all the way down. Looks like a washboard, if you ask me. I ain’t seen nothing like it when i was young.
- Brittle Nails: They break easy, chip, and split. Like a dry leaf in the fall. Can’t do nothin’ with ’em.
- Thick Nails: They get all hard and tough. Difficult to trim. Almost like they’re made of wood.
- Ridged Nails: They get these lines runnin’ up and down. Not smooth no more. Makes ’em look old, if you know what I mean.
Now, I ain’t no doctor, but I’ve heard tell it’s got somethin’ to do with that… whatchamacallit… estrogen. Yeah, that’s it. Estrogen. Apparently, when you get older, your body don’t make as much of it no more. And that estrogen stuff, well, it helps keep your nails strong and healthy. So when it starts droppin’, your nails start actin’ up. It’s just the way it is, I guess. Nothin’ much you can do about it. Just gotta live with it.
But you know, there are some things you can try, I reckon. Keepin’ ’em moisturized is a big one. Just like you gotta water your plants, you gotta keep your nails moisturized too. Otherwise, they dry out and get all brittle. I use whatever lotion I got around, sometimes even vaseline do the trick. You don’t need fancy stuff, just somethin’ to keep ’em from gettin’ too dry.
And eating good helps too, I figure. You know, fruits and vegetables, that kinda thing. Gotta feed your body right if you want it to work right. I try to get my greens in, even though I ain’t always a fan, if you know what I mean. Makes a difference though, I can tell ya. And drinking plenty of water is important too, keep everything hydrated.
Now, some folks say you gotta take all sorts of vitamins and supplements. Biotin this, collagen that. I don’t know about all that fancy stuff. Seems like a lot of fuss to me. But hey, if it works for you, go for it. I stick to eatin’ my greens and keepin’ things simple.
And another thing, you gotta be careful about infections. You know, when you get older, your skin gets thinner, and it’s easier to get infections. And that goes for your nails too. So keep ’em clean, and if you see somethin’ that don’t look right, go see a doctor. Don’t wait around, ’cause it could get worse. I had a neighbor once who ignored a nail infection and she almost lost her finger. Scared me straight, I tell ya.
Taking care of your nails is just part of takin’ care of yourself. It ain’t always easy, especially when you get older. But it’s important. You don’t want your hands lookin’ like you been diggin’ in the dirt all day, even if you have been diggin’ in the dirt all day! You want them to be presentable, right? And healthy hands means healthy nails. It is important no matter what age you are in.
So, that’s my two cents on menopause nails. Just gotta keep ’em moisturized, eat good, and be careful about infections. And if things get real bad, go see a doctor. They know more than I do, that’s for sure. But this is what I have learned in all my years, and I am telling you, it ain’t rocket science to keep yourself looking the best you can even when everything around starts sagging. All you need is some common sense and a little hard work. And remember, you ain’t alone. Lots of women go through this. It’s just part of gettin’ old. Ain’t nothin’ to be ashamed of.
Just gotta keep on keepin’ on, that’s what I say. Life ain’t easy, but it sure is somethin’. And a lady always takes care of herself, no matter her age, that is how I was brought up, and that is what I will keep doing till the end. So take care of them nails, and take care of yourself. You deserve it.
Menopause nails are just one tiny piece of the puzzle, they do not define you and there is still plenty of beauty to be found at old age. You just gotta look around.
One day at a time, and do not ever worry about a chipped nail. There is worse things to be had.
