Well, lemme tell ya about this here fruit salad thingy. Someone called her Ina Garten, she makes it with lemon stuff, “lee-mon-chello” they call it. Fancy, ain’t it? Sounds like somethin’ you’d drink, not put in a salad. But hey, what do I know?
Anyways, this Ina woman, she says it makes the fruit all zingy and whatnot. I guess it’s kinda like puttin’ a little pep in yer step, but for fruit. Never tried it myself, always just threw some apples and bananas together and called it a day. But this lemon stuff, maybe it’s worth a shot. Makes it sound all highfalutin, like somethin’ you’d serve at a fancy party.
- First off, you gotta get yourself some fruit. Whatever’s lookin’ good at the store, or maybe you got somethin’ growin’ in yer yard. Apples, berries, grapes, melons… you name it. Just make sure it’s ripe and tasty. Nothin’ worse than a mealy apple or a sour grape.
- Then you gotta chop it all up. Not too big, not too small. Bite-sized pieces, ya know? So you can get a little bit of everything in one bite. That’s the best part of a fruit salad, all the flavors mixin’ together.
Now, here comes the tricky part, the “lee-mon-chello.” I ain’t even sure where you get that stuff. Probably gotta go to one of them fancy liquor stores. But Ina says you just pour a little bit over the fruit, not too much though, just enough to give it a little kick. And she says it keeps the fruit from turnin’ brown, which is always a problem with apples and bananas. Nothin’ worse than a brown, mushy fruit salad.
Some folks say you can add other stuff too, like honey or yogurt. I guess that makes it creamy and sweet, but I ain’t tried that neither. Sounds kinda weird to me, puttin’ yogurt in a fruit salad. But hey, to each their own.
Now, this Ina woman, she makes it sound real easy. Just chop up the fruit, pour the lemon stuff on, and voila! Fancy fruit salad. Says it only takes 20 minutes. That’s faster than makin’ a pie, that’s for sure. And it’s good for dessert, or even breakfast if you’re feelin’ fancy. Put a dollop of whipped cream on top, if you wanna be real indulgent.
This salad, it’s good all by itself, or you can put it on top of cake. Angel food cake, pound cake, whatever you got. Makes it look pretty and adds some sweetness. I reckon it’d be good on pancakes too, if you’re feelin’ adventurous.
I heard tell this lemon stuff is good for keepin’ the fruit from turnin’ brown. Somethin’ about “vitamin C” they call it. Guess it’s like magic, keeps the fruit lookin’ fresh and tasty. Just like when you put lemon juice on apples to keep ’em from goin’ brown.
This Ina Garten, she’s got all sorts of fancy recipes. Pasta with eggplant, soup made from cold vegetables, even tofu wrapped in lettuce. Don’t know about all that, sounds too complicated for me. But this fruit salad, that’s somethin’ I might try. Even if it means buyin’ that fancy lemon stuff. Might just surprise myself, and make somethin’ a little bit special. Who knows, maybe it’ll be the talk of the town, or at least the talk of the church potluck.
