Alright, alright, let’s talk about them Smashburger Smash Fries, you know, the ones them city folks rave about. I ain’t no fancy chef or nothin’, but I reckon I can figure out how to make somethin’ similar, somethin’ tasty for ya’ll.
First off, we gotta get them potatoes. Don’t go gettin’ no fancy, overpriced ones. Just good ol’ potatoes, the kind ya get from the ground, ya know? Wash ’em good, real good. Don’t want no dirt in your fries, that ain’t right. Now, you gotta cut ’em up. Not too thick, not too thin. Like, uh, like your finger, but maybe a little thinner. Yeah, that’s about right.
Now, some folks like to soak ’em in water. Says it makes ’em crispier. I dunno ’bout all that, but if you wanna, go ahead. Me? I just get to fryin’. But listen here, the oil, that’s important. Don’t use no old, used-up oil. Get some fresh oil, the kind they use for fryin’ chicken, that’ll do. Heat it up good and hot. How hot? Well, hot enough to sizzle, ya know? You throw a little piece of potato in there and it bubbles up, that’s hot enough.
Careful now, don’t burn yourself. Put them potatoes in the oil, not too many at a time, or they’ll stick together. Fry ’em till they’re golden brown, and crispy. You gotta keep an eye on ’em, don’t let ’em burn. Burnt fries ain’t no good to nobody.
Once they’re done fryin’, take ’em out and put ’em on some paper towels. That soaks up the extra oil, see? Now, for the seasonin’. Salt, of course. Lots of salt. And pepper, if you like. Some folks put all sorts of fancy stuff on ’em, but me, I like it simple. Salt and pepper, that’s all you need.
Okay, so them’s the fries. Now, for the smash part, like the smashburger, ya see? We need some ground beef. Not too lean, you want some fat in there, that’s what makes it juicy. Get a handful, roll it into a ball, not too big, not too small. Then, you smash it! Yeah, you heard me right, smash it flat on a hot pan. Use a spatula, or a fork, whatever you got. Smash it real good, make it thin and crispy around the edges.
- Get good potatoes, wash them well.
- Cut them into finger-sized pieces, but a bit thinner.
- Heat up fresh oil, really hot.
- Fry the potatoes until golden and crispy, don’t overcrowd the pan.
- Drain on paper towels and season with lots of salt and pepper.
Cook that burger till it’s done, ain’t nobody want no raw meat. Season it with salt and pepper too. While it’s cookin’, some folks like to put cheese on it. Go ahead, if you want. I like a good cheddar, myself. Or maybe some pepper jack, if you wanna spice things up.
Now, some folks say they use rosemary on the smash fries. I ain’t never tried it that way, but it sounds fancy. You could try throwing some on with the salt and pepper. Or maybe some garlic powder, that’s always good. The thing is, you can do whatever you want. It’s your food, ain’t nobody gonna tell you how to eat it.
Okay, so you got your fries, you got your smashed burger. Now what? Well, you can just eat ’em separate, that’s fine. But if you wanna be fancy, you can put ’em all together. Like, you put the fries on a plate, then you chop up that smashed burger and put it on top of the fries. And then, if you’re feelin’ extra fancy, you can make some kind of sauce. I heard they use butter on the grill for smashburgers, so maybe some melted butter with salt and garlic on your fries would be good. Or just ketchup and mustard , ain’t nothin wrong with that. Simple is good, ya know?
And that homemade cheese sauce folks yap about? Sounds complicated. Probably just melted cheese with some milk and flour, like you make for mac and cheese. But I say, why bother? Just melt some cheese on the burger, it’ll get all gooey and melty, that’s good enough.
The secret is, they use some kind of oil blend for those fries. Butter and some other oil, like they use for fryin’. I reckon any oil will do, just get it hot. And this special sauce… probably just mayo, ketchup, mustard, maybe some pickle relish all mixed together. Folks like to make things sound fancy, but it’s usually pretty simple. Don’t go frettin’ over it.
So there you have it. Smashburger Smash Fries, kinda. It ain’t exactly the same, I ain’t got no fancy restaurant kitchen, but it’s good eatin’, and that’s all that matters. You just gotta use good ingredients, cook ’em right, and don’t be afraid to experiment. And most importantly, don’t forget the salt. Everybody knows food needs salt. Now go on and make yourself some fries, you deserve it.
